My journey back from a life threatening, perspective altering illness has awarded me a better understanding about just about everything under the sun related to optimal health—mind, body, soul. It brings me to my knees to learn a surprisingly large number of ailments are brought on by diet and lifestyle.

A healthy person comes from a healthy lifestyle. That means every facet--body, mind and spirit. And if those things are not in balance, things will remain in chronic disorder. I believe whole-heartedly food and lifestyle are our drugs and are our best defense against disease, both mental and physical. Good food and good thoughts bring energy and vitality and diamonds on your inside. Bad food and negative thoughts strip away those precious things, leaving you drained, lethargic, depressed, sick. You’d be amazed at what a difference a few changes can make in how you feel-inside and out.

10 ways to a Better, More Vibrant You:

Take these tips and run. They really will change your life for the better. Some are simple, some are more obscure. All are important.

  1. WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE! Drink it. Lots of it.
    • Most Americans are chronically dehydrated. If you think you are hungry, first have a glass of water with lemon and wait a few minutes. You were probably just thirsty.
    • Drink 32 oz of filtered water as soon as you wake up. Make this a habit. Your body will sing.
  2. EASE UP ON COFFEE and "Energy" Drinks. The ups and downs of caffeine include dehydration and blood sugar ups and downs, making mood swings more frequent. Stimulants like caffeine and sugar may seem to give an energy boost, but they actually deplete our bodies, drawing out minerals and nutrients.
  3. EAT YOUR GREENS. Think Green for spring, the time of renewal and refreshing, vital energy. Greens are full of vitamins and nutrients, and great for improving circulation, lifting the spirit, purifying the blood and strengthening the immune system.
  4. DON’T BE SO SWEET. Sugar causes mood swings, depression, fatigue. And the more you eat, the more you want! Avoid sugar and chemicalized artificial sweeteners. NEVER NUTRASWEET. PERIOD.
  5. SHAKE THAT. Physical activity is key. Start with simple activities, like walking or yoga—start with 10 minutes a day and increase. Just MOVE.
  6. GO TO BED! When you are tired or stressed, your body craves energy. Late night cookies, anyone? These cravings are often a result of years of sleep-deprivation, going to bed late and waking up early.
  7. LOSE THE BEEF. Evaluate the amount of animal protein you eat. Eating too much meat, dairy, chicken and eggs can lead to low energy. So can eating too little! Experiment. Respect your body’s individuality. Grass-fed and wild are always good qualifiers.
  8. LOVE YOURSELF. Find activities that restore your energy, such as a walk, a bath, a museum, a movie or whatever you enjoy, and schedule a weekly date with yourself to do these things! Helps to de-stress.
  9. Get in touch with your spirituality. We are spiritual beings in a physical world. Find ways to get in touch with your spiritual side, be it meditating, dancing, drawing, going to church or temple or being in nature.
  10. KEEP THE ENERGY VAMPIRES AWAY. People can drain you of your energy. It doesn’t mean that they are bad, but it is good to notice who drains you and why. Try to change those relationships by communicating and setting boundaries, or, end it.
